064: Jack Stahlmann - On Knowing Yourself
Lately my husband has been making some amazing connections for me. First - last week's episode with John Capecci - and now this week's episode with Jack Stahlmann! I felt a connection with Jack because his face and mine are both very expressive. (See last week's Mini Moved Me for pictures.) Jack is a "motivational speaker" - but he brings a new zest to that idea, which I really appreciate! We talked a lot about 'knowing ourselves' as a speaker (or actor/performer) and how essential that is to do good work.
Take a listen!

In the show we talked about:
- Hollywood, and how Jack chased the Acting dream...
- Jack is a character actor - "that guy" - it can be boring!
- Working in a nonprofit - great experience as a speaker, and learning how to share a story that matters
- The value of acting as a background for being a speaker
- How essential it is to know yourself
- (Check out our Mini Moved Me on this very topic! - http://www.thismovedme.com/045-mini-moved-me-on-finding-your-pearl-button/)
Jack is focusing on getting more of his content out there, and writing on a regular basis. Last January he wrote the article, "What If Kanye Was Your Coworker" - and it went viral. (And then there are times when he has 16 people reading what he wrote.) Either way, he has to keep writing. (And it's made a big impact on building his audience!)
(That also reminds me of this awesome TED Talk by Elizabeth Gilbert. Our job as artists is to show up and do the work...)
This Moved Me Moments:
SALLY: When my sweet little Harper (who sings the intro to the Coaches Corner segment) was watching the movie Home with the fam. And there's a moment when - SPOILER! - the main little adorable alien character looks as if he has died. And my Harper, who doesn't know the Hollywood movie tropes like we do, was so upset. It was a reminder to me that kids have such open hearts, and so easily believe. Let's do more of that! We will feel more, which is a good thing.
JACK: Jack has been inspired lately by Amy Schumer! I mean, how can you not?! She is fierce. She makes me laugh, and is so bold and brave. Jack appreciates her story of growth, and commitment to what she's doing. She has had a wonderfully accidental journey.
And, for your viewing pleasure, this moment with Amy on Ellen made me laugh out loud many, many times...
Thanks so much for listening! I am grateful for you.

Dr. Nick Morgan (a guest on This Moved Me) created the Presentation Prep Course. It's like having Nick coach you - which is no small thing! Nick is the ultimate pro - and I myself have walked through this course. It's so incredibly helpful and full of insight and tools. If you are prepping for a presentation and can't afford the costly hours of hiring someone live - check out this e-course!
And, I cannot forget the editing geniuses at We Edit Podcasts! They are so on the ball. Just last week I hadn't heard from my editor - which was strange - and so I sent an email expressing my concern. I got a phone call back from the FOUNDER, assuring me all was well. That's what I call service. Please trust me - I have saved so many hours by having these folks take on the nit-picky task of editing my shows for me. If you have a podcast - or want to create a podcast - this is sooooo worth it.
