017: Michael Margolis - On Transformative Storytelling
Michael Margolis is a storyteller. But he didn't come to it naturally. He was a disgruntled social entrepreneur, who was searching for something more meaningful.
In this episode of This Moved Me, Michael and I talk about transformative storytelling - and how through the very act of sharing our own stories, we ourselves are changed.
Listen to the podcast
In this episode we discuss:
- How storytelling can be a spiritual practice, and how we can reinvent ourselves through the stories we inhabit
- The revolutionary nature of stories - they themselves are the agent of change
- The essential nature of risk in creating talks that are "alive"
- How our stories grow and change as we grow and change
- When does sharing (vulnerability) become too much, in an age of personal disclosure
- Learning to talk to strangers like "they're your BFF"
- How important "stretch" is in a story - the low notes, the high notes, the movements - the resolution of opposites.
- How we might unintentionally stumble into manipulation; we need to hold our stories with humility.
- And Michael shares a "Story Hack"
"To me storytelling is a spiritual practice... it's so much more than how to tell a better anecdote...it goes to the heart and soul of what we are actually creating." [Click to Tweet]
This Moved Me Moment:
MICHAEL: Went to soak in the hot spring in Northern California with a group he's a part of. While he was there, he attended a workshop that explored the connection between desire and fear. The bigger the desire, the bigger the fear. Right now, Michael looked at his own life, working with StoryU, trying to start a global storytelling community, that sees something others don't see and wants to build a platform of influence around it. But you've got to do the inner work, as well. And now that they're building this platform, the next piece of Michael's dream is coming true... and it scares the crap out of him. As much as it's his dream and desire, it's tapping into big fears as well.
