Rick Altman – founder of Better Presenting and the Presentation Summit Conference – joined me on the show to talk about how we can make better presentations with better slide decks. What an important mission!
As he said, hating PowerPoint is a badge of honor for so many people – but Rick's knowledge of PowerPoint has given him a chance to see the benefits of such a powerful tool, as well how we normal humans (read: not design or software experts) can use it well – in order to serve our audience and our goals.
Rick is a passionate advocate – and brings that passion and joy into this conversation.
ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR POWERPOINT ACTUALLY POWERFUL
On the show, we talked about:
- How Rick “invented desktop publishing” as the basis for the foundation of slide design
- The tension between knowing the software and knowing DESIGN
- The 3 essential tenets to a great presentation

THIS MOVED ME MOMENTS
I shared a moment of courage from a friend of mine. She spoke at her mom's funeral – a moment none of us want to have – and yet, we feel compelled to say something. But what do we say? How do we prepare for this moment?
This wonderful friend didn't want to speak – which made it all the more moving when she did. <3
Rick talked about the level of attention and detail showered on him and his wife on their most recent vacation cruise from the cruise director. She upped the bar significantly – which reminded Rick about what he can do as a conference organizer or event planner. Being present – that these people are the most important people in the world to you at that moment – that is a gift!
I also think it's a great way to approach any presentation. Does your audience feel like they are the most important thing to you at that moment?
